Faculty
Our department consists of 30 tenured or tenure-track faculty. Our faculty represents the best of combined
teaching and research. They are professionals who bring our students the current topics, the newest techniques
and discoveries, and the potential new directions from their fields of specialization.
Our faculty has recently won teaching and research awards at the College and University levels.
They belong to more than twenty national professional organizations, societies, and scientific journals
(as members of the editorial boards). They have published over 400 refereed articles, invited papers,
chapters, and books in the last five years. This research is supported by over $5.0 million yearly in
grants held by faculty from federal and other sources outside the University.
The faculty strongly encourages undergraduate students to participate in our departmental seminar
series featuring prominent outside speakers as well as departmental faculty and their research associates.
Properly prepared undergraduates are active in our research laboratories and some complete a prestigious
Senior Honors Thesis. These research experiences are invaluable to students going on to graduate school
or pursuing employment in the rapidly growing biotechnology industry.
Faculty has offices on floors 2-5 of SR2 and floors 3 and 4 of HSC. Faculty profiles can be found here.
Degree
Information
Degree programs offered
in the biological sciences within
the Department of Biology and Biochemistry
include the Bachelor of Science and
the Bachelor of Arts in both Biology,
Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences.
Options within either program permit
the undergraduate student to study
broadly within the discipline or
to focus within an area of specialty
ranging from biochemistry and biophysics
to cellular, molecular, and developmental
biology to ecology and evolution.
All programs require extensive additional
study in chemistry, physics, and
mathematics. Undergraduate research
opportunities are available with
our faculty and such participation
is strongly encouraged. Students
may carry out laboratory work on
a volunteer basis or may apply for
a stipended position, a number of
which are available to qualified
students on a competitive basis.
