Our department consists of 45 tenured or tenure-track faculty. Our faculty represents the best of combined teaching and research. They are professionals who bring our students the current topics, the newest techniques and discoveries, and the potential new directions from their fields of specialization.
Our faculty has recently won teaching and research awards at the College and University levels. They belong to more than twenty national professional organizations, societies, and scientific journals (as members of the editorial boards). They have published over 400 refereed articles, invited papers, chapters, and books in the last five years. This research is supported by over $8.0 million yearly in grants held by faculty from federal and other sources outside the University.
The faculty strongly encourages undergraduate students to participate in our departmental seminar series featuring prominent outside speakers as well as departmental faculty and their research associates. Properly prepared undergraduates are active in our research laboratories and some complete a prestigious Senior Honors Thesis. These research experiences are invaluable to students going on to graduate school or pursuing employment in the rapidly growing biotechnology industry.
Faculty has offices on floors 2-5 of the Science and Research Building 2 (SR2), floors 3 and 4 of the Houston Science Center (HSC), and the 3rd floor of the Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC). Faculty profiles can be found here.
Degree programs offered in the biological sciences within the Department of Biology and Biochemistry include the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science and the Philosophy Degree in both Biology and in Biochemistry.
