The Institute for Molecular Biology (IMB) is an interdisciplinary organization of thirteen faculty members from the Departments of Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences, Biology, and Chemical Engineering that relies extensively on molecular biology in individual research programs. The institute contributes to the maintenance of a number of molecular biology resources including a local VAX based computer network that makes an array of molecular biology software packages available to over forty users, a DNA oligonucleotide synthesis facility, and an automated X-ray film processor. In addition the IMB owns several pieces of research equipment that are available to member laboratories.

The IMB members work to foster better coordination of the life science departments and frequently prepare joint funding requests. Especially noteworthy has been the institute's role in establishing a human genome research program at the University of Houston.

The institute sponsors distinguished seminar speakers, and frequently provides financial support for students attending scientific meetings.
