| The
Institute
for Molecular Biology (IMB) is an interdisciplinary organization
of thirteen faculty members from
the Departments of Biochemical and
Biophysical Sciences, Biology, and
Chemical Engineering that relies
extensively on molecular biology
in individual research programs.
The institute contributes to the
maintenance of a number of molecular
biology resources including a local
VAX based computer network that makes
an array of molecular biology software
packages available to over forty
users, a DNA oligonucleotide synthesis
facility, and an automated X-ray
film processor. In addition the IMB
owns several pieces of research equipment
that are available to member laboratories. The IMB members work to foster better
coordination of the life science
departments and frequently prepare
joint funding
requests. Especially noteworthy has
been the institute's role in establishing
a human genome research program at
the University of Houston. The institute sponsors distinguished
seminar speakers, and frequently
provides financial support for
students attending
