former Department of Biology. It
is awarded to undergraduate students majoring in either Biology or Biochemical
and Biophysical Sciences. In
order to qualify, students must have achieved junior standing, must have
completed at least two regular semesters (fall or spring) in one of the above
majors in residence at the University, and must have at least one additional regular
semester of study after the award is made. Criteria for award are 1) academic excellence, as measured
by overall grade point average (GPA), GPA in the major, progress toward the
degree, and participation in research activities; 2) potential for and
demonstrated interest in postgraduate study in biology, biochemistry, or a
health profession field; and, 3) participation in department-related activities
such as discipline-related student organizations and tutoring. Applications will be evaluated by a
committee consisting of the department Chair, the Associate Chair of
Undergraduate Affairs, and the Director of Undergraduate Research. The award
amount will be subject to the discretion of the award committee, up to a
maximum of $1000 per award. These
